„La cumparsita“ (little street procession, a grammatical diminutive of la comparsa) is a tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, with lyrics by Argentines Pascual Contursi and Enrique Pedro Maroni. It is among the most famous and recognizable tangos of all time. Roberto Firpo, director and pianist of the orchestra that premiered the song, added parts of his tangos „La gaucha Manuela“ and „Curda completa“ to Matos‘ carnival march, resulting in „La cumparsita“ as it is currently known. „La cumparsita“ was first played in public in the old Café La Giralda in Montevideo, Uruguay. Auf Tango Tanzveranstaltungen ist es zur Tradition geworden, dass „La cumparsita“ als allerletztes Lied gespielt wird – wenn es erklingt, gibt es Applaus für den DJ/die DJane (und hinterher). Woher diese Tradition stammt, konnte ich bisher nicht sicher ermitteln, aber ich habe Legenden gefunden:
The 1951 version of D’Arienzo’s La Cumparsita was the most sold tango record in history and so popular that DJs kept it to play it at last.
There’s a story about Pugliese playing La Cumparsita while the police was waiting outside to arrest him after the milonga finishes, and the La Cumparsita turned out to last forever only until the police left.
There is a story about people refusing to leave the milonga until D’Arienzo’s orchestra played the Cumparsita…

Dadurch, dass es Traditon ist, „La cumparsita“ auf Milongas (Tango Tanzveranstaltungen) als letztes Lied zu spielen, ist es unter Tango Tänzer:inne:n der bekannteste (und meistgepielte) Tango überhaupt. Allerdings ist diese absolute Präsenz eines urugayischen Tangos eine ausgleichende Gerechtigkeit gegenüber den uruguayischen / montevideanischen Anteilen am Tango, die durch den allgemein geprägten Begriff „Tango Argentino“ leider oft in Vergessenheit geraten.

Jedoch ist das Lied über die Szene der Tango-Tänzer:innen hinaus kaum bekannt (anders als zum Beispiel El Choclo oder Oblivion) – obwohl es durchaus von Musikliebhabern in anderen Musik-Genres aufgegriffen wurde – aber eben nie ein großer Hit wurde.
